  • Type of project: (Bus)

Name of project: Rocar De Simon family

    Involved persons: Renault_Safra_ER100, alexredx, MihAMi02

    Help needed: no, so far

Details: A break from the German buses presented around here and also the first (partially) Romanian bus in OMSI. :)

This bus was produced by Rocar (for many years the only Romanian bus manufacturer) between 1995 and 2003, based on a De Simon-licensed body. Although the Italian flavour is obvious, bearing resemblances with the ubiquitous Inbus U210FT, the Romanian-made versions had significant differences given by the German-sourced components (such as the MAN D0826LUH engine, the Voith D851 transmission) and domestic ones (the flip-dot matrix and announcement system). Around 370 buses were made in the 8-year course, the vast majority of them (340) ending up at RATB (Regia Autonomă de Transport București - Bucharest's public transport operator). The last of these were withdrawn in august 2011.

This mod is intended to recreate the most known versions of the bus. The first one will be the most wide-spread, U412-260. Other derivatives are planned and will be shown at the right time.

  • Thanks!

Sadly there will not be an Italian version in a foreseeable future. My aim in OMSI is centered around buses that had significance in Romania, as our country isn't almost at all represented in the simulator (with the notable exception of a Bucharest repaint on the Busotto), and more specifically finishing this current project.

As of the original Inbus, "phaiderikos" from the MOF (I'm not sure if he has a WebDisk account) started a long time ago the Siccar 176 (or 177?) based version. Unfortunately, he was unable to continue it due to many (I suppose including personal) reasons. If he, an Italian that is fortunate enough to still enjoy the sight of such buses "in flesh and bones", put the project aside, then I, a Romanian from a country that had exactly one second-hand Inbus many-many years ago and 99.99% surely scrapped by now, don't stand a chance to do it on my own (mainly due to lack of proper support photos; which is why the Rocar was made at an otherwise fairly good eye approximation, as the only surviving example that I could've reached is derelict beyond hope and to find a running one I had to travel at least 400 km and be granted access in the depots, which is difficult around here if you don't know the right people, plus my lack of time). Should he ever resume working on this project, I would gladly give him a helping hand.

  • Since the release of this project in v0.7 BETA, many things have been added or changed. All the bugs in the previous post (and some more I found later on) were fixed, many sounds were fully replaced, passenger positions were corrected and more real-life functions have been scripted (i.e. roof hatches, audio announcements, kneeling), making the bus (almost) a full representation of the original.

Next in line: improving textures, re-scripting the matrix console and adding the 3-step retarder.

  • The project is going forward. I have overhauled many sounds (engine, doors, brakes) which will add to an even more immersive gaming experience while driving this bus. In the meantime, here's a throwback to november 2019, when the project had just been exported to Omsi.

  • Yes, I'm still alive.

Yes, the project is still going, and getting closer and closer to its release.

The matrix control, announcement, suspension and door scripts have been overhauled (the former 2 thanks to MihAMi02 ).

Geometry was improved (including textures), as well as several sounds.

The number of repaints/setvars has doubled since the beta release. Here's just an example (still WIP), true to the original.

  • Rocar De Simon UL70 is in a pretty advanced state of development, geometry wise. On the outside, we have made all the necessary modifications (front bumper, the tiny window, modified doors, modified engine hood, eliminating the roof hatches, etc.). Inside, the seating configuration has been adjusted, and the interior is now waiting for the finishing touches (certain elements that are different from the already reproduced U412-260 model).

New sounds for this model will follow soon. The only big challenge left is to figure out the driver's cabin layout, as we've not been able to find any photos of it on the internet...

  • [Before / After]: We contine working on geometric improvements on the Rocar De Simon.

Version 2.0 will offer OMSI 2 drivers an overhauled cockpit. All buttons, checklights and instruments have been entirely redimensioned according to real life dimensions, thanks to our friends who have sent us pictures and measurements. Some components were also retextured, for an even more accurate depiction.

With so many substantial changes, we couldn't resist making a before / after. 😉

  • It's been a while since we last posted here about our Rocar De Simon bus pack, so it's time to wipe up the dust with a comprehensive changelog of fixed and improved features that Rocar De Simon V2 will bring. In the upcoming V2, besides recreating the entire RDS range of models that operated in Bucharest (and other parts of Romania), the released U412-260 will receive tonnes of updates on its geometries, scripts, textures and sounds.

  • Genuine Romanian - Genuine Italian

Today we will present some of the elements which make our bus to be a genuine Romanian, genuine Italian. Its history started with the Italian Starbus UL70 prototype which was presented in Bucharest in 1992, and evolved into more than 300 Romanian license-built buses.

Probably it's no coincidence that the UL70 window handles were "star" shaped, given that the manufacturer was STARBUS. As a curiosity, this type of handle was extremely rare in Italy, the birthplace of the UL70. The overwhelming majority of the Italian buses had "drop-down" windows, which slide vertically, so it was very difficult to find pictures in which the "star" handle is clearly shown. By pure luck, a YouTube video of an interurban Inbus provided our long awaited answer. Thus, Italian fans, as well as Romanian fans can enjoy a genuine Italian feature in the upcoming RDS V2.

Bonus: the drivers of the UL70 will enjoy enhanced ventilation, thanks to the window panel which rotates about its median vertical axis.

The first series of the Romanian-assimilated U412-230 had window frames locally sourced from other Rocar products of the time. These are unique in design and functionality. The window handle has a complex shape, with one tooth which must be pulled out from the orifice in order to unlock the window and drag it open. Basically, the windows were designed to be locked in the open / closed position, as the window frame has two orifices where the window handle can be fixed. The handle itself has a rounded shape, with two rivets holding it on the metal plate which slides the window.

We've managed to model this system down to the finest details in OMSI2, thus, Rocar De Simon V2 will have yet another element which is genuine Romanian.

  • 🇷🇴🚌🇮🇹 Authentic Romanian - Authentic Italian

💡 We continue the series of posts meant to showcase the evolution of the #Rocar #DeSimon bus throughout the years and we shall focus on the front and rear ends of the body. The RDS prototype was made from parts imported from Italy and assembled at the #Bucharest factory. This is why it borrowed several characteristics from genuine Italian INBUS #U210FT buses.

🔎 The most visible is the small window beneath the windshield. Its purpose, at least according to the Italian designers, was to increase visibility in the front-right corner and facilitate curb stops. In reality, the respective space was often occupied by various objects (fire extinguishers, for example), so the window remained a purely aesthetical feature. It’s no wonder that, during the production optimization, ROCAR did away with it (coinciding with the complete redesigning of the dashboard, which we will cover in the next episode).

🛠️ The front bumper was also redesigned. U412-260 marked the appearance of a single-piece bumper in lieu of the two-piece bumper flanking the towing hitch.

⚙️ Financial reasons were grounds for redesigning the rear end as well. If UL70 had a “wraparound” bonnet, later models had a planar one, which meant repositioning the rear lights block. A license plate “niche” was also created.

  • 🇮🇹 🚌 🇷🇴 Genuine Italian, Genuine Romanian

⚙️ In the previous episode we wrote about the exterior design changes brought to the Rocar De Simon over the years. Today we begin to look into the interior design changes. We dedicate an entire episode to the driver's post.

⌚ UL70's dashboard was genuine Italian, by and large taken over from the Inbus U210FT. However, the buttons and instruments were either locally sourced, or borrowed from other socialist bus makers.

🚍 With the debut of the U412-230 and the removal of the front windowlet, the dashboard is completely redesigned, bringing another genuine Romanian element to this bus.

🕹 The instruments' layout on the left and right consoles are also different from the UL70. The driver now has easier access to the gear selector and the two pressure gauges are in their field of view while driving.

🎛 The introduction of U412-260 marks the replacement of locally-made instruments with superior quality, German-made units. Additionally, in order to comply with European laws, the plain speedometer is replaced with a tachograph.

🚏 In the next episode we will write about the passenger cabin, where the improvements are just as substantial. Stay tuned! Until then, why don't you follow us on our social media:

  • 🇮🇹🚌🇷🇴 Genuine Italian, genuine Romanian

👥 We continue to expose the design evolution of our Rocar De Simon. Last time we’ve shown how the driver’s cabin evolved with the years. Now, it’s time to look into the passenger cabin, where the design changes are just as notable.

⬛ UL70 was, again, custom to its Italian “cousin” INBUS U210FT. The most obvious similarities can be found in the wheel wells, the driver’s cabin wall, seats, bars and the inner panel color scheme.

🛞 The first changes appear with U412-230: driver's cabin is fully enclosed, and the left front door leaf is reserved only to the driver, while passengers can use only the right door leaf. The interior is fitted with unpainted, stainless steel bars, and simplified wheel wells (especially the front ones), to reduce manufacturing costs.

🟩 With the introduction of U412-260, the seat color is changed from a dull gray tone to a lively turquoise, which brings the interior to life. The seat arrangement is also changed, increasing the seating capacity from 24 to 25. Perhaps the most visible change is the new color scheme of the panels: the beige-teal combination lights up the interior.

🚧 The first few U412-260 buses had an open driver's cab, reflecting the Western tendencies of the time. However, this did not last in Bucharest, as the cabin became fully enclosed soon after entering service. The new separating wall is thicker, more robust than the one of U412-230, and it will later become factory standard for all units subsequently delivered to RATB.

  • ⚠️🎥 Rocar De Simon V2 Sound Test

    [LINK]:

🔈 With our "Rocar De Simon V2 Bus Pack" getting closer and closer to release, we invite you onboard 3 different buses to "taste" 3 different sound configurations, based on vehicle type and vehicle maintenance condition.

    🎬 Rocar De Simon UL70

We start with the "prototype", the first Rocar De Simon ever produced. The UL70 is in top condition, yet the engine sound is somewhat rugged and coarse. It's a trademark of the early Rocar De Simon buses, which had a 230hp engine.

    🎬 Rocar De Simon U412-230

Next we climb onboard the U412-230. This model is the successor of the UL70, as the production of these vehicles was optimised and more components were procured locally instead of being imported from Italy. The engine remains the same, however, the sound-proofing has been degraded in the manufacturing process, leading to an overall noisier ambient. The vehicle we've chosen is also very poorly maintained. As a result, the trademark Romanian "AB" axle is howling throughout the journey.

    🎬 Rocar De Simon U412-260

Last but not least, we test the U412-260. This is the last iteration of the RDS family, and this can be seen in all aspects of the bus, whether we're talking about performance, looks or ergonomics. With a more powerful 260 hp engine, and better sound-proofing, the riding experience is significantly better. This vehicle is very well maintained, so axle sounds are not noticeable.

🧡 Which is your favorite sound set? We can't decide which one we like best...

🙏🏻 Credit for the sounds goes to the following OMSI 2 authors:
