1. Beforehand: difficulties/hurdles
Although this method is the easiest and fastest, there are a few difficulties in using this method, as all OMSI data will be reset to factory defaults:
- If OMSI AddOns were purchased via Steam, they will also be restored (of course in the delivery state or the currently patched version).
AddOns that are not activated via Steam must be reinstalled and activated. - All settings, keyboard shortcuts, etc. will also be deleted. Saved options can be restored later from the option_presets\ folder, keyboard shortcuts are in the Inputs\keyboard.cfg file, presaved weather settings are in Weather\.
- Subsequently installed language packages are located in the Languages\ folder and can also be restored from there.
2. Restore the basic state
The following steps must be carried out:
- Open the OMSI games folder, usually located under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common.
- Rename the OMSI 2 folder, for example to OMSI 2 Backup. This is the folder of the backup where all files are unchanged.
- Select the properties of OMSI 2 in Steam.
- Under Local Files you can find the field "Check files for errors". Then run the Steam error check and wait. During this step, Steam normally downloads all inconsistent files again. - In this case, all OMSI data will be re-downloaded, as there are none left. - At least not in the folder Steam expects.
Now the OMSI folder presents itself like a complete new installation.
It is important that no original files are overwritten and that original folders are not touched (for example, it is recommended that the maps\Berlin-Spandau and vehicles\MAN_SD200 folders remain in their original state or that changes (repaints, etc.) are made manually) in order to rule out new sources of error.
Every now and then, OMSI should be started and it should be checked whether the re-inserted buses, maps and mods work properly. If they do not, the problem can usually be localised better than in an old OMSI installation where it was no longer possible to trace the individual change steps.
