How long is the OMSI WebDisk going to exist?
We do not plan to shutdown
our services around our platform "OMSI WebDisk" and we do not think about it. The latest upgrade in 05/2018 of our platform into the newest web standards proofs it, take a look into the thread "Reboot (2018)". It was planned about 2 years ago and we collected donations for the licenses, but in this long time we collected only a sum of 40
percent of the costs. Thanks to everyone who donated.
What happens if the current operator quits?
The current operator will search for a new operator together with our staff (OMSI-WebDisk) and Aerosoft ("Publisher"). Current co-operators are favoured because they already know the system and our mentality how to manage our platform, the users, our partner (the publisher Aerosoft) and - last but not least - the game "OMSI" as best.
How would the shutdown of the "OMSI WebDisk" take place?
We already said: That is currently not predominant and only a hypothetical What if? scenario! If the horror scenario occurs, it takes an orderly course:
Firstly we will notify you via our forum or the "FAQ & Info" area. As next we will sent an e-mail to all registered users of our platform with a link to the post or article, where you can find more informations. From then, a period of minimum 30 days is provided for all authors to make backups of their uploaded files.
Why is the download speed so unstable?
The OMSI WebDisk consists of one single server. It's the same like your internet at home: Our bandwith is limited.
Most of you have at home an internet capacity of 16.000 kbit (16 Mbit) up to 50.000 kbit (50 Mbit), our server has 1.000.000 kbit (1.000 Mbit).
Commercial file hosters that run a big cloud of servers
- using commercial
memberships
(you have to pay a "premium" account, otherwise your download is limited to 50-100 kbps) - and/or have annoying
advertisments
(lot of advertisments like popover/popunder/layers and much more, also you have to resolve a stupid captcha shit)
- and they delete your uploads
after a certain time of inactivity.
(they regenerate free disc space by deleting files)
We with our WebDisk in opposite:
-
free of charge
(you pay absolutely nothing, donations are voluntary and welcome every time) -
without
advertisments
(except the discrete banners of the publisher "Aerosoft" related to OMSI at all or other simulation games, but we have NO layer/popover/popunder) - and without inactivity
limits for files
This comparison shows that our services is very different to a regular file hosting platform. We have no business and make no money! Additional capital - e.g. for a cloud or a server farm, - is completely missing. But as long as there are only a few load peeks, we will accept it to keep the operating costs as low as possible.
Review:
Our expirience from year 2013 at the start of our platform has proven that there is only a tiny willingness by our users to donate. The founder - and also today still the operator - of the WebDisk mostly paid the costs alone because only the monthly costs had not been donated by users.
The fact is:
We can not optimize our ressources, e.g to rent better servers with a larger bandwith (10 Gbit or more, instead 1 Gbit only) when the financial capital is missing to do it. Everyone who cries about it should tell himself the question: How much money did YOU spent that we are able to improve our services and/or what had YOU do to animate third persons to help us, too? Why are no positive results present?
How large can the uploaded files be?
We have set a upload file size limit of 525 MB which equals 500.679 MiB in binary notation shown in
Why is Windows something "special" here? Microsoft use incorrect prefixes in Windows and ignores the international standards for differentiating the units of measurement in binary and decimal (according to DIN ISO / IEC 80000-13). They calculate the size binary and combine it with the prefix of decimal units. That misleads you!
