1. What is the main directory?
The OMSI main directory is a folder on the hard disk that contains all the game files.
With a few exceptions, all files in OMSI are stored in plain text. Most file formats
can be opened with the Windows text editor or other comparable software (e.g. Notepad++) and can be read and understood by humans. Exceptions to this are binary data(.exe, .terrain), compressed formats (.o3d) and textures, the latter can be opened with common image editing programmes.
Further information on the file formats used.
Unlike many other games, OMSI does not have its own separate folder in the user's documents folder, all files are located in the main directory or subfolders. A unique selling point of OMSI is for this reason the possibility for distinct modding - theoretically (almost) all files themselves can be modified, so there are no limits to customisation.
The first level of the main directory contains general files, such as the Omsi.exe, the game starts, changelogs and the log file.
2. Location of the main directory
The directory is located in the virtual games library (essentially also a folder on the hard disk) created via Steam. The library can be selected when installing / moving games. Several libraries can also be set up in parallel, so that certain games can be installed on a different hard drive, for example.
It is recommended to install OMSI on an SSD.
The exact path differs from system to system, below is a short list about
possible paths:
C:\Programmes (x86)\Steam\teamapps\common\OMSI 2
C:\Programmes\team\apps\common\OMSI 2
D:\Programmes (x86)\Steam\teamapps\common\OMSI 2
D:\Programmes\team\apps\common\OMSI 2
C:\Games\teamapps\common\OMSI 2
The location of the main directory can be found out in Steam as follows:
- open Steam:
If you search for "Steam" in the start menu and click on it, Steam opens. Depending on the equipment of the PC or the last Steam start, this may take some time. Afterwards - if not yet done - the login with the Steam account follows. - show library:
Now an overview of all installed or purchased applications opens. If you do not see OMSI, you must delete the filter (X symbol behind the text): - Open the properties of OMSI 2:
After right-clicking on the "OMSI 2" entry and opening the properties, the following dialogue, in which you switch to the "Local files" tab: - Display local files:
The button "Browse local files..." leads directly to the OMSI main directory
